I don't know who wrote this originally. It came up in a discussion about the difficulty of reading literary criticism.

By the way, I learned several new words from this:
Reification: The process of treating an abstract concept as if it were a real, concrete thing.
Semiotic: Having to do with semiotics, which is a field of study encompassing the use of symbols and signs in languages.
Blancmange: White edible stuff. A kind of dessert.

Ugh, I just got out of a 7-hour English department meeting, so this is hitting too close to home. I really don't like the intellectual snobbery of some English teachers.

I haven't made blancmange lately - well, not for years, actually. Think of it as extremely thick, rather bland tasting custard. It's solid at room temperature, and is, in my humble opinion food for sick children. It doesn't, however, always make them feel better. In spite of the "blanc" it comes in vanilla (white) chocolate, and strawberry and any other flavor/color you care to add to lightly sweetened, cornstarch thickened milk.
